Built and expanded by the Knights Hospitaller in the 12th and 13th centuries, the Krak des Chevaliers is one of the most complete medieval castles anywhere. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Below it lies Wadi al-Nasara, a valley of villages, orchards and old monasteries that is lovely to explore on foot.
